Fire Protection for the Iron and Steel Industry

Iron and Steel production processes present a number of significant fire hazards. The heavy machinery required to process and transport materials are subject to some of the most extreme conditions possible. Slag removal and handling equipment are often exposed to temperatures reaching 2000° F (1093° C) and present extreme hazards to both personnel and equipment. The business critical nature of this heavy machinery, which often is running around the clock, make minimizing down-time and preventing business interruptions paramount.

Kidde Fire Systems offers a unique approach to fire protection—total system solutions. With this approach in mind, we have established a total fire protection package ideal for Iron and Steel Machinery. Listed below are UL Listed Detection, Suppression and Control Systems most commonly used for this type of application.

Suppression

Kidde KVS™ Suppression System

The Kidde KVS Suppression System is a superior method for sensing and suppressing a fire with dry chemical agent before it can threaten the operator or the vehicle and then securing the protected vehicle against possible fire reflash with a foam agent. The Kidde KVS™ System offers three Detection options for sensing fire quickly, often in areas hidden from the operator’s view. The dash-mounted Control unit alerts the operator to the fire situation for a safe shutdown and evacuation of the vehicle.

Detection

Kidde IR-1 Infrared Detector

The Kidde IR-1 operates by sensing two separate bands of infrared energy and generating a fire signal when it sees fire from all types of fuels, lubricants, gases and other combustibles. It features a 90 degree field of vision, a 0.5 second response time and is immune to nuisance alarms from sunlight, lightning, artificial forms of light and welding arcs.

Kidde LHS Detection System

Linear heat sensor cable functions as a fixed temperature digital heat detector for commercial and industrial applications where spot-type detectors are unsuitable. Compatible with all types of control units, Kidde LHS small diameter cable is capable of detecting heat from a fire over its entire length. A wide range of jackets and alarm temperature settings are available for proper system design.

Control

Kidde KVS™ 2020 Control Unit

Designed to control detection and suppression functions for the Kidde KVS™ vehicle fire suppression system, the KVS™ Control Unit uses a fast-response infrared fire sensor, spot heat detector or linear heat sensing cable to spot fires quickly. It provides visual and audible alarms to the vehicle operator, shuts down the engine and activates the fire suppression system.
